As the adage goes a little bit goes along way. Don’t put your colorant or other additives before it is mixed, or you might find it challenging to achieve a well-mixed epoxy, which can lead to poor bonding or structural integrity. Mix epoxy thoroughly before adding anything. Materials such as colorants or metal shavings can be added to your epoxy solution before you fill a crack, by following a simple process: Does this mean that you have to find something other than epoxy to create a special effect? No!Įpoxy has a neat attribute in that it accepts a variety of materials added to it that can give it just the flair that you are looking for. But some projects call for a different look whether it’s a splash or color, or some other lustrous characteristic. Epoxy looks great in its “native form”, with its clear appearance, or some products have a nice amber tone. That generally means dealing with imperfections that you will invariably find in the slab by filling wood cracks with epoxy.Įpoxy is a great material for filling voids because it provides an attractive surface that can be sanded flush with the surface of your project, and coated with the same finish that you put on your wood. This provided me with a way to grab the blank without cutting a tenon or recess into the epoxy/cartridge blank. There is growing popularity around working with slab wood and making big, bold table tops with this material. I glued a second block to the bottom of the blank after it came out of the mold. But when it goes onto the lathe, the wood forms a tenon on the bottom. When the blank goes into the pot it it’s on the top (rim) of the bowl.

The cross section of the casings on the inside of the bowl is interesting. That way your friend can have a Case bowl (brass casings) and a bullet bowl with a mix of caliber bullets of varying types (solid lead, jacketed, hollow point, etc).

Love the idea, might I recommend the same idea with bullets too. We’ve got a lot of great info on incorporating resin into other projects, too.ĥ Responses to “George’s Epoxy Bullet Bowl” If you’d like to try a bowl/epoxy project, but aren’t interested in casings in resin, you might like a wooden bowl with resin accents. Epoxy projects typically don’t get finish, they get buffed. But in the end, the process was similar to any bowl turning project. The casings really slowed the process down, and their shavings came off so hot he had to put a glove on his left hand. George toggled between high speed steel and carbide tools to do the turning. Read the epoxy instructions, and don’t push it. Most epoxies need a lot of cure time before you can put them on the lathe, 5-7 days. – A pressure pot will eliminate bubbles from the casting.George tumbled his with a brass cleaning product. – Clean the casings if you want them shiny. It needs to be an epoxy that’s suitable for deep pours.
